Battle of Bunker Hill

This million dollar Howard Pyle illustration “went missing” from the Delaware Art Museum in 2001. How does a piece of art go missing? Aside from the obvious “thieves” angle, how could that happen?

What if, hundreds of years from now, when we visit a never explored planet and meet its alien inhabitants for the first time, we find this painting prominently displayed? Let’s assume this alien race looks nothing like a human beings. Let’s assume their planet looks nothing like Bunker Hill. Let’s assume they insist the painting is a fantasy piece and even introduce you to the artist.

How would we handle that diplomatically?

How would we solve the mystery of how it came to be in their possession?
